Once movie review!

Yesterday night I had the pleasure of watching "Once" - a love story surrounding two musicians.  It's a rather old movie, as it came out in 2006, but definitely a timeless one as it is a beautiful story (mostly on the girl's part, though, in my opinion).

I'm kind of just a sucker for love stories revolving music and musicians, so of course I would highly recommend this movie.  Plot wise, it moves kind of slow.  However, the music in it is really, really beautiful.  I also didn't used to like the popular song from this movie, "Falling Slowly", because the first time I had heard it, it was sung terribly and so when I normally hear that song I have a bad impression of it.  Being able to hear all the songs in their original context made me fall in love with every one of them.

Not trying to spoil anything - it was an unexpected ending.  It's not a happy one, but not a sad one, either.  There were definitely lots of parallels between Once and this year's Begin Again - as they were directed by the same person, and that is as much as I will say about the themes of love and music regarding this film.

I also really liked the character of Marketa (the characters don't have names!).  She has a very gentle attitude but an assertive personality, and that is something I hope to achieve (and am currently working on achieving).  As with all indie films, the story was very raw and real and human.  It quickly got to the point of both character's stages of life and quickly showed how musically inclined and talented they are.  It also subtly showed finding the joys and satisfactions in the little things of life.

Today I also noticed that the two of them are walking on a guitar fret board in the movie poster.  Although, I don't agree that there is only one right person in the world for any given person.  That is another topic entirely which I will probably blog about sometime soon.

Anyways, I highly recommend this film if you want a relaxing movie with very realistic characters and scenarios along with beautiful music.
