Political Parties

Today, or rather this weekend, I realized that there aren't that many Democratic Christians.  I know for the most part, Christians vote Republican, though they don't have to, but why do I vote Democratic?  To be honest, I based my vote last year based on the presidential debates.   I tried my very best to see it as objectively as possible, yet I still sided with Obama.  So I decided to research a bit more in depth of the general differences between Democrats and Republicans.  I then realized that I almost equally agree and disagree with the principles and philosophies of both.

I think that there should be simple percentages for income tax - no progressive income taxes - and that's a Republican way of seeing things.  However, there are many loopholes that these rich people know how to get around so then people like me, or Democrats, favor things such as the progressive income tax.

Democrats want less military spending - which I want.  Unfortunately, given that so many countries are so hostile towards America, we do need to spend money on the military to protect ourselves because of how idiotic this country has acted in the past.  I just don't like how there are so many budget cuts for schools while the government takes our tax money to make our military stronger, that's just stupid.  Education is very important - without education, the foundations of any country will crumble.  Power is important, but not as important as America seems to emphasize it.  As cliche as this sounds, real power lies in knowledge, not combat.

Gay marriage - to be honest, I'm not entirely sure where I stand on this.  Before Proposition 8 came out, I didn't really care if gay people wanted to get married - that's their problem.  But knowing that the proposition forbids the marriage of homosexuals and that as a Christian we shouldn't encourage those things, there's kind of a religious peer-pressure to have the proposition pass.  But if I could be honest, I think the 'love' between the same two genders who say they're in love with each other don't fully reach all of the four loves (storge, philia, eros, agape).  However, just because I wouldn't want gay people getting married doesn't mean I'm homophobic or I insult gay people all the time.  People are people.  For me, wanting proposition eight to pass is just like wanting marijuana to be banned.  Simple as that.  Some Republics support gay marriage and some Democrats don't support it.  It really just depends on the person, I guess, not really the party...

Republicans oppose abortion, and so do I.  Unfortunately, Republicans support the death penalty - which I don't support, so I side with the Democrats here.  Some comedian was poking fun regarding abortion and the death penalty, but unfortunately what he said was true - the issue comes down to 'what age is it appropriate to kill a human being'?  No age!  Never!  Even the most psychotic of murderers, each life is precious.  I personally just don't think it's right that humans deserve the judgement of whether or not to take a life in any situation.  The Democratic views and the republican views of life just don't really make sense to me.  Their own philosophies contradict each other - it's like either side doesn't even know what they're doing (I wouldn't be surprised if it were the case).

I agree with the Republicans that we do live in a relatively free society, and that we should be wise in the decisions we make.  However, there are unfortunate circumstances that will always be inevitable, such as being born into a poor family or being discriminated against - and with those circumstances, the opportunities aren't always equal or available to everyone.  So that's where I'm a Democrat, because Democrats desire to promote more equality and strive to rid of these unfortunate circumstances.

I don't really know where I stand on the gun issue - both sides are pretty compelling to me.  I do wish, though, that the second amendment was never made in the first place.  However, since it's been there for 200 something years, I don't really know what to think about it.  It'd be nice if all gun sales stopped - but then that wouldn't be fair for people who didn't have guns because there are still hundreds of other people with guns.  Then, the people that could have bought guns but don't have any because sales were banned can't be protected by the people who originally had guns!  And besides, being Asian, we know there are many other ways of killing or harming people.  Banning gun sales may not help as much as people think it will.

Being a Christian, I obviously favour pro-religion like the Republicans.  However, I am not pro-business, anti-bureaucracy, nor am I pro-military.  Republicans disregard inequality and environmental issues way too often, and I don't like that. I also don't like the private sector, and I don't really approve of privatization.

So for the most part, I think I side with the Democrats - but kind of just barely.  Maybe I should just vote Green.  Even the philosophies within each of the major parties contradict each other, and both are equally as hypocritical.
