So, I originally began watching this film because of Tom Hiddleston. However, the movie was fairly effective in directing my attention towards the main character, Hester, for the majority of the movie. I saw Tom Hiddleston, but didn't realize that it was actually Tom Hiddleston who was playing the character of Freddie Page.
Anyways, this post is not one about Tom Hiddleston. There's one particular dialogue that struck me in the movie. Hester and Freddie are at some museum. Hester, being rather high-class and cultured, is telling Freddie about certain background information behind a piece of artwork. Freddie, being the playful person he is, makes a joke of it, and is upset that Hester doesn't laugh. He then tells her "We can't all be cultured" and in response, she says "We can't all be childish". Thus commences an argument between the two, in public.
This dialogue stuck to me because I've always admired the idea of being cultured - of having class, of knowing your classic novels, of knowing your history, of knowing your geography, of having connections, of excelling in a particular academic subject (perhaps foreign languages, in my case). And coincidentally, for most of my life, I've known myself as not being able to take a joke. I would seem like I could, but secretly, I would be rather angry inside, and these feelings would later be displayed through consequent actions. However, lately, I'm just glad that I've been able to take jokes better lately. People think differently and have different senses of humour. I don't know what finally made this click in my head, but all that matters is that it has. As a result, I've not been ridiculing others myself, but I'll tend to turn people's feelings and opinions against them, in a fun and playful way.
There's also something else I'd like to talk about but it's irrelevant to the overall topic of this post and it's late so I need to go to sleep anyways.
