I live in the infamous city of Cupertino, and I only describe this place like so because of what has happened this past week.
First, on Wednesday morning, there was this shooting. Some guy at the cement factory up past Foothill went crazy and shot and killed some people during the factory's safety meeting (how ironic...). He then drove all the way to the Hewlett Packard headquarters on the other side of the city, shot some lady's leg, and drove off with her car. The police finally caught him Wednesday night near Fremont High School. All the school districts were closed (my sister did not have to attend school, but I did because I'm technically in college), and barely anyone dared to go on the streets the whole day, knowing that the shooter was armed with six guns. This event won't do very well for the African-American community here... It's so unbelievable how close in proximity I was to all of this. I have a friend whose house is extremely close to the factory, but thank God she's far from this place (in regards to the shooting). And imagine if I had any shifts at the bakery on Wednesday (the bakery is directly across the street from HP headquarters) ! That would have been frightening.
On the afternoon of the same day, Apple's co-founder, Steve Jobs, passed away. It was just an extremely depressing day for this city. Shootings in Cupertino, and an extraordinary public figure of Cupertino passing away. I don't know what I could have done for the victims (and their families) of the shooting except pray, but a friend and I payed our respects to Steve Jobs at the Apple headquarters.
Rest in peace, all whose time had come October 5, 2011 in this city of Cupertino.
