I've got a pile of deadlines on my desk: tests, papers, internships, scholarships, class schedules you name it, I've got it written in my planner. I've planned out the next five years of my life, including grad school and my career. People tell me I can't plan every step of my life, but I'm on a roll, and nothing can stop me... except for my grandpa's death. When death becomes real through a loved one, you start planning your life differently. Things begin to matter a lot or not at all. I try to control every part of life, from my schedule to my grades to the type of people I hang out with. And while it makes me successful and productive, sometimes life forces me to make room for things I didn't plan for. Sometimes I can't do anything because someone else didn't do their job or because circumstances weren't quite right.
But I have to keep in mind that while it's good to be responsible and do well at whatever you do, it's better to let God have His own way of doing things. Maybe He doesn't want me to get straight A's because I would forget that He gave me the brains or because I'm lazy. God has His own To-Do lists for us, so we need to lave our schedules open. God deserves more than to be "penciled in". Usually the greatest things in life happen when we throw out our own agendas and follow His. He is the Tour Guide of life, so why would we try to wander around by ourselves? You don't have to do something you've planned out because God has already paid for a better itinerary than we could ever imagine.
